How Edm Was Invented And Where It Is Used
CNC is the traditional method which is used to cut metal and make patterns in it. This method is quite good itself but there are few drawbacks of this method as well. This machine can not be used in those places which are hard to reach moreover the cutting done through this machine is also of rough nature. Industries of today are trying to present the micro model of every product and because of this the parts are getting more and more complex. That’s why manufacturers of these parts have started to use Edm wire method because with this method cutting of metal can be done even in minute places. Through this method complex cutting and design obeying has become possible. Edm machine is slow than CNC machine but its accuracy is far more then the CNC machine. The final product after the use of Edm machine is also very fine and smooth and does not leave any uneven surface. These characteristics of Edm wire technique distinguishes it from CNC and other cutting techniques.
In 1943 two Russian scientists with the name of Dr. N.I Lazarenko and Dr. B.R Lazarenko invented this method after studying the research of Joseph Priestley. ...
... The basic objective of these scientists was to discover the effects of electrical charge on metals but in this experiment they found a way through which they can control the destruction of metal. In this method two electrodes are used to make holes and curves in the hard metal. In this method the metal is drowned in de-ionized liquid, this liquid helps in controlling the heat of metal produced due to electrical sparks. These electrical sparks are produced by electrodes and through these sparks they can made their way from within the metal. These sparks also help a lot in making cuts in hard metals and they can reach in those areas which are mostly untouchable for other machines. Manufacturing of complex machine parts has become possible only because of this method as it leaves a smooth and even surface after its use.
Symmetry is the essence of this method and to maintain a perfect geometry it should be guided by a motion control machine. This method requires great caution as it will destroy anything which will come in it’s, that’s why it is used in such a manner that it does not touches any part of the work piece. This method is also used to remove the waste and excess material from work piece so that the work piece can come in a fine shape. The de-ionized liquid used in this process plays two roles in Edm wire cutting process. Firstly it maintains the temperature caused due to electrical sparks and secondly it washes away all the waste with it. When a company uses Edm wire method for multiple types of cuts and holes then they usually involves multiple electrodes in this process. Every cut and hole is not of same size and mass, that’s why multiple electrodes are used so that the cuts and designs remain according to product design.
