China is one of the oldest civilizations in the world and has always fascinated the rest of the world with its highly developed culture. The people from the western countries have always shown a keen interest in the Chinese civilization. A few of the inventions that prove the Chinese greatness are the paper, compass, Abacus and gunpowder. The country is big in size and highly developed. The last twenty years has seen China emerge as one of the most economically developed countries. The speed with which the country is developing has increased the curiosity among the westerns to try to learn the secrets behind the success.

However, the economic development has also led to greater rifts in the society. On one side the standard of living has increased among the people, but on the other hand there are millions of people in different parts of the country who are living below the poverty line. The boom in economy has led to the necessity of learning of foreign skills and culture including the English language. The demand for English teachers has increased and opened great opportunities for the volunteers to explore China. ...
... The volunteer in China can provide the poor people with an opportunity to learn English and other skills by which they could improve their livelihood and get a chance of rising above the poverty line. The people in China are very respectful and love to learn new things. The volunteers will have good experience teaching such willing students.

The volunteers can find many options and locations to help the downtrodden. Qingdao is a very modern city with huge buildings, wide roads, train and bus stations, airports but on one side is the market area, which is unlivable. Volunteers here can enjoy exploring the beautiful city while teaching and developing the market area. Another project nearby at Chengdu is the Panda conservation project. Then there are many villages, towns and city outskirts where the various voluntary groups undertake different types of projects. Teaching English on one side to the young children and enjoying the local Chinese traditional life or helping the farmers or strolling in the national parks are a few activities one can do while volunteering in China.

Volunteers share accommodation with other volunteers at flats or home bases. They are given three meals in a day. The most important thing that a volunteer should have is the 90 day (3 months) tourist visa of China endorsed on their passports to enter the country. They should carry medical insurance with them and take all the necessary vaccinations and booster injections at the time of traveling to avoid complications on arrival. It would be fun combining business and pleasure.
