Garden rooms are a great way of making more use of the space you have in your current home. More and more people in the UK are making use of the space they have in their gardens. They are finding, in many cases, that they do not have to move to accommodate the growing needs of their family.

All kinds of rooms can be installed in your garden. Uses include Granny annexes, gyms, offices, playrooms, conservatries, outdoor kitchens, spas, craft rooms, workshops, photographic studios and many others.

Planning Permission for Garden Rooms

The great thing about garden rooms is that you can often put them up without having to seek any planning permission. However, there are limits, and understanding these is important. Putting up a structure that is just a few inches too wide or tall can result in the entire building having to come down or part of it being demolished.

Usually the building cannot be attached to the existing property or an existing wall. The maximum height of the building is 2.5 meters, but in most buildings, there must also be headroom of 2.2 meters. This limits the kind or roofs that can be ...
... used. This is for buildings within 2 meters of any property. For buildings put up further away there are less height and size restrictions.

In certain areas such as National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and The Broads the size of the building is limited. Structures in the garden greater than 10 square meters are not allowed no matter how far away from the house they are located.

Buying Garden Rooms

By far the simplest approach is to buy pre-fabricated garden rooms. However, this does not limit choice. The best firms will design a garden room from scratch and pre-fabricate it in their factory. These can be quickly installed. For most, all that is required is the laying of a slab. In many cases, it can be craned into place. It is wise to double check that the buildings being provided comply with the necessary building regulations. Also, ask about planning permission compliance. The best firms only sell buildings that comply with all regulations, but you should double-check that this is in fact the case.
