Move Over Xbox 360 – It’s Time For Two New Versions Of The Xbox 720

Listen up, Xbox 360 fans! If you thought the amount of hype for next year’s Xbox 720 release was big already… it just doubled. The Xbox 720 will come in two very different versions, according to a new report by The Verge. The first version is the next-gen gaming console we’re all expecting, and the second will be a more affordable low-tech box aimed at the casual gaming market.

This smaller model will apparently run on Microsoft 8 but won’t be able to play the latest triple A (AAA) titles, acting instead as more of an entertainment set-top box. Consumers will be able to download apps, movies and casual games from Microsoft’s growing online market.

Hardware specifications are still yet to be revealed, but apparently the console will be an “always on” device, letting consumers resume their games and movies almost instantly.

Although it is telling that Microsoft are trying to tap into the lucrative casual gaming market, the reaction has been mixed among Xbox fans, with some welcoming the concept of an immersive Xbox Live experience, while others see this as a money-making ploy by Microsoft.

Microsoft themselves have remained pretty tight-lipped on the issue, so we must remind ourselves that these are rumours for the time being, however the company did reveal that is always looking into extending the scalability of its consoles:

Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention."

Microsoft are still yet to announce the release dates of their two consoles but it is widely believed to be in time for the Christmas season next year. Hopefully there won’t be too many disappointed kids on Christmas day if their parents buy them the wrong Xbox 720 – although at least it will, either way, be an update on the old Xbox 360!
