The whiteboard was invented by Martin Heit, a photographer. The idea was originally developed for having next to a wall phone to take messages down on. Using erasable markers, its non-porous surface allows it to be used like a chalkboard. Melamine is the least expensive option. Steel boards offer magnetic properties.
