Visiting The Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are without doubt up there as one of the most amazing feats of nature we can witness on our wonderful planet! A magical display of green lights in the night sky they are most commonly witnessed in the arctic region though the displays have been spotted further south and even here in the UK this year!

The auroral activity which causes these amazing light displays runs in 11 year cycles with this year and 2013 in a stage known as “Solar Maximum” which means they are at their peak so if you have always wanted to a trip to see the Northern Lights then next year could well be your best chance for nearly a decade. Obviously The Northern Lights will still put on displays once they exit Solar Maximum however the display will likely weaken.

Given the vast reach of the Auroral Zone the Northern Lights can be viewed from a host of Scandinavian countries which are situated directly underneath it, they include Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Finland and Greenland. So where would be best for you to enjoy a Northern Lights Holiday?

Well if we are being honest it is quite impossible to pick as all destinations are stunning but here are two of our favourite ones.

Northern Lights Norway

You are about to find out why we struggled to pick because even though we now have a country there just happens to be multiple trips you could undertake for a Northern Lights holiday. For example you could opt for Tromso which is the traditional starting point for polar explorations or you could opt to go offshore and witness the wonder of the Northern Lights from The Lofoten Islands, a small archipelago off to the north west of Norway.

Northern Lights Iceland

Opting to view the Northern Lights from Iceland also gives you the opportunity to view them from the world’s most northerly capital city, Reykjavik! Not only does Iceland offer you the world’s most northerly capital city but it is also home to Lake Myvtan which is highly regarded in terms of locations for viewing the Northern Lights, as is northern Iceland in general.
