In an age where the take up on smartphones exceeds that of PC’s in the 1980’s, mobile jobs have never been so in demand. While on mass iOS Development still out earns Android development, Android handsets themselves are outselling iPhones. The variety and quality of the apps on offer through open source technology and a competitive price point has caught the attention of consumers. When though, will Apps agencies catch up with the demand for Android? The majority of mobile app jobs are still focussed on iOS and although the iPad maintains its market dominance in the tablet scene, some feel it’s only a matter of time before Android becomes a market leader there too. Any recruiter in the mobile industry will tell you that although the majority of mobile app jobs are still in iOS, its Android mobile jobs which command the greater salaries.

Let’s not forget Research in Motion (RIM) and their BlackBerry OS 10 or Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8. There is no telling for shore if these two can keep up with the front runners and continue to grow their contribution to the mobile jobs market. Lets’ face it though, ...
... once upon a time Apple was the runner up too, so it would be unwise to discount RIM or Microsoft and assume that they will not be contributing to the growth of mobile app jobs.

Legal wrangles over patents are certainly keeping the lawyers employed but what will the effect of the dominant players disputes be on the mobile job market? The unprecedented damages of $1 billion USD paid by Samsung to iPhone, for what iPhone alleged to be a copied design, does not so far seem to have stemmed the rise of mobile jobs.

However, nothing lasts forever and should the mobile job market perhaps learn from the rise and fall or early IT forerunners like Acorn Computers and Clive Sinclair? Will the public’s thirst for mobile one day be quenched and short term demand fall just as it did for home computers and games once everybody in that land had one of their own? Or will the mobile revolution go on providing growth in mobile app jobs for decades to come like the IT revolution of the 80s or the industrial revolution of the 1900s long before it?

The wholly grail of mobile development perhaps is in enterprise products and Android’s open source platform may be best placed for integration with existing enterprise systems. Let’s not forget Firefox’s OS though which will be launched in 2013. No matter which OS comes out on top, in the end enterprise development certainly offers the greatest opportunity for growth. Mobile app jobs in enterprise app development may still be few and far between but the corporate world is watching carefully to see where the mobile job market leads.

What we can be sure of is there are more mobile app jobs than mobile app developers and, for the short term at least, the mobile jobs market will continue to grow.
