Tuscany is a place where tourists with different tastes visit for so many different reasons. There is a huge treasure of fine art, breathtaking architecture, world renowned wine and extra-ordinary cuisine. However what man of the travelers miss is the rich literary history of this central Italian region. It was this part of Italy which inspired some of the great works of writers like Boccaccio, Petrarch and Dante. Apart from them there were other great writers as well who got the inspiration while they were in Tuscany. Thus literature lovers should always visit the places in this part of town which inspired their favorite writers.

Arezzo

An art fan knows Francesco Petrarca as the father of the sonnet. He is also known as the Renaissance master who in his letter, To Posterity, called this as the place where he first saw the light. Casa del Petrarca, small museum built over medieval remnants which are considered as Petrarch’s birthplace is also home to the Accadémia Petrarca di Léttere, Arti e Scienze. This is a research library which has more than 15,000 works dating back to the 14th century which includes ...
... Petrarch’s manuscripts.

Close to this museum is the oldest and largest park of Arezzo, Passeggio il Prato, which has the city’s only monument to Petrarch. Alessandro Lazzerini created this beautiful white marble statue.

Certaldo

Giovanni Boccaccio, author of the Decameron, has Certaldo as his designated birth place. This small town is the place where Boccaccio spent last 13 years of his life. There only two possible ways a person can reach the walled area of Certaldo Alto: either a walk or funicular rail. It still has the terracotta brick buildings, narrow streets and churches which date back to the 11th century.

Visit the Casa del Boccaccio, a library with 3500 volumes which includes numerous foreign translations of Boccaccio’s major and minor works which include Famous Women and The Decameron.

If you have planned your vacation in the summer then visit Certaldo during Mercantia which is a Renaissance festival. It includes beautiful street performances, heart pumping music, Italian street food and much more. In a way the town comes alive and reflects the vigorous spirit of the Tuscan people.

San Gimignano

The 14 medieval towers which are preserved in the walled city of San Gimignano is very well known for this achievement and a favorite tourist spot. However lesser known is the fact that Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the world’s only producer of the white wine has its bases in here. The drink is so captivating that in 1643 Buonarroti, nephew of the painter Michelangelo, wrote it kisses, licks, bites and stings for the white wine. No matter what is your accommodation in Tuscany but a hotel named Bel Soggiorno, which serves this strange wine Vernaccia, should be on the list of must visit places.
