The Polish pharmaceutical market value (in gross retail prices) rose by 3.7% y/y to around PLN 22.3bn (EUR 5.4bn) in 2011, at a similar growth pace as in 2010, according to market estimates. ... in January. Pharmaceuticals sales value dropped by approximately 4% y/y in Jan-Sep 2012, according to market data. The decline was noticeable not only on the retail level, but also in medicine output. According to our calculations based on official statistics, the pharmaceuticals sold production volume dropped by 9% y/y in Jan-Sep 2012. The pharmaceutical production index also slowed down visibly in Q1 and Q2 this year.

The new Drug Reimbursement Act, aimed at curbing reimbursement expenditure, became effective as of Jan 01, 2012, but started to show troubling effects on the market since the end of last year. The new law affects not only producers, but also distributors, pharmacies and hospitals and forces companies to rethink strategies and reduce headcount in order to cope with shrinking market.
Accordingly, players’ estimates expect some 13,000 jobs to be lost in the pharmaceutical industry.

While the legislation changes will predictably drive downwards this year the segment of prescription-based subsidized drugs, the OTC sector is expected to continue growing, also benefiting from the companies’ shifting focus to the segment, more flexible in terms of margins for wholesalers and pharmacies.
