Saving Money While Saving Your Plumbing
Let's face it, everyone has issues with their indoor plumbing. The toilet clogs, the bathroom sink starts draining slower and slower, your shower becomes half shower, half bath. Need to call a plumber but don't have the money to pay his massive salary? Follow a few of these money saving tips and keep your pipes flowing clean and smooth.
The first tip is obvious; keep up with your plumbing maintenance. Clean your drains occasionally, even if they are running fine. A little bit of preventive work will help you keep your emergencies to a minimum. Fix your leaking faucets, as they are likely to get worse over time. Clear your slow drains before they become a much harder to deal with clog. Fix your toilets that are constantly running, as that likely means you have a complete breakdown coming to you in the future. Clean your faucet aerators by removing them and back washing them in the sink. However, this isn't going to help much if you already have a problem.
The second tip is just as obvious as the first: learn to do basic repairs yourself. Chances are one of your friends knows how to get that clog out. Or you can ...
... use an internet search engine and find directions to solve the problem you are having. Chances are someone out there has asked the same questions you have and has solved your problem. Most basic repairs are fairly simple. If you're having issues with low water pressure on both your hot and cold faucets, check your aerator. It's probably got a lot of grime on it which is preventing your faucet from flowing at full pressure. Sometimes the issue in a slow flowing sink is simply the stopper. Clean this and you will have your sink flowing fine and save paying for a plumber's trip out here to do it. Same's true with your tub, often you can clean the pipes yourself using a commercial cleaner and a pipe cleaner (often available at your local grocery store). Your toilet running? You can find replacement parts easily on the internet or in your local hardware store, and both places have plans on how to replace your old parts.
All these tips can be done at home without the help of a plumber. Though, sometimes it's good to know when to throw in the towel and ask for help. When you are looking for a plumber, be sure to shop around! Don't take the first plumber you encounter in the yellow pages. Check their reviews from other customers on review sites. Make sure you are getting someone reliable and trustworthy that will get the job done while keeping time and charges at a minimum. Don't forget about your family! Chances are that you have someone who'd be willing to do the work at a discount.
With all this being said, plumbing issues are unavoidable. Following these simple tips will help make the inevitable a little bit more manageable, and you can use the money you save for something that really needs it.
