Kitchen interior designing is no easy job as it pulls at all the strings of the heart of the entire family. From chats, late-night romance, celebrations and homework sessions – the scale of kitchen functions have dramatically increased! When designing a home, no space offers more brainstorming opportunity than the kitchen. It is the place where sweet memories are made. From cutlery sets to vessels, oven to refrigerator, sink to chimney, the chemicals of life and their storage spaces, interior paints that won’t get spoiled with steam or heat – everything needs to be perfect to provide a satisfying cooking experience.

Kitchen styles
Scullery sized kitchen to entire big rooms, the size of a kitchen can say a lot about the interest of its users. Open style large kitchen formats are becoming more popular since 1980s as compared to closed space bound kitchens. An open kitchen interior gives a creative and social viewpoint towards cooking. An extractor hood can remove bad smell from open kitchens.

... for kitchen interiors are no more beige or grey. Bolder hues like scarlet red panels with turquoise blue cabins, lemon yellow paint and a hue of other shades are coming into fashion. Among neutral hues, pearl white and jet black are also capturing people’s interest these days. Covering the paint with one coat of oil-based polyurethane and gently rubbing wax over it helps in increasing the longevity of the applied paint.

Cabinets and countertops
Contemporary designs are minimalist in nature as well as extravagant. Things to watch out for are functionality, finish, colour, design and hardware components. Modular sliding cabinets made of stainless steel still rule the roost. They have special grooves to accommodate all kinds of vessels, plates, cutleries, knives and bowls. They can be designed over a wide granite countertop with mounted steel chimney over the stove.

Space design for sink, refrigerator and oven
Since, sink is the most frequently used place, new designs tend to keep it in the middle rather than at the side. Many kitchen interior designers advocate using a triangular layout where the sink lies in the middle, with the refrigerator and oven kept at the two angular ends on the opposite side forming a triangle. This concept allows faster access to the three most commonly used appliances.

Lighting
Warmth and space are worthy aspects to be considered for lighting, besides the primary factors – luminance and energy efficiency. Sleek hanging pendants are preferable to ornate chandeliers. Accentuated lighting with spot highlighting over functional areas and cabinets should be considered. A halogen based strip lighting over the countertop will provide ample light for efficient and easy use.
