A Madrid Bull Bar! The El Ruedo By Dale Pierce

Madrid was, is and always will be full of bull bars or places where the walls are covered with mounted bull heads and pictures of Manolete, that serve as a gathering place for fans of the art form. These establishments vary in quantity and quality. Some are virtual museums and others are dark and dank places only the bravest of individuals will visit. Some are vibrant and fancy. Others are places where drinks are bought and served, with little cheer about them.
The El Ruedo ranks as a museum within a restaurant.
It is not for people who mind having the unseeing glass eyes of dead bull heads staring down at them while they eat.
Aficionados, however, will love the El Ruedo.
The main attraction, aside from the drinks and food, would be a multitude of mounted bull heads that span the walls. Some were killed triumphantly in the Spanish bullrings. Others not so, as indicated by a number of heads that’s still having their ears intact.
Even though deceased and long since sworded, many of these animals still look imposing from their hanging position of the tables. One can imagine the damage ...
... their horns might have done.
There are also some suits of light on display behind glass cases, the shiny costumes worn by matadores on the sand, who have donated these materials to the El Ruedo.
Framed photographs abound. One may find Morante, Jose Tomas, Cordobes, Curro Romero, Dominguin and many others captured posed or in action.
Sketches, paintings and posters abound as well. Every available inch of wall space is either covered or destined to be covered with some form of remnant from the bullring.
The El Ruedo is located at Avenida Pedro Diez 4 in Madrid.
