Audi A6 – The Real Contender

In the year 1968 Audi launched the Audi 100 which then became the roots to the new A6. For 26 years four distinct generations came under that name, but in 1994 it was replaced by the first A6. Although the car was just the facelift of Audi 100, Audi’s newly adopted naming policy was the reason that brought car into the line. Audi A6 is different as the hybrid construction of aluminum and steel and new looks. But the base of A6 remains chiefly front wheel drive which is better that others. The entry-level 2.0 TDI SE is the most important A6 which will account for more sales than all other variant of saloon or Avant estate combined have achieved.

Audi A6 has a lighter body than the previous models. A6 saloon is offering great cabin space, bigger boot than the A8. It has big enough boot space to meet the needs of most of the people but it lags behind the class leading Mercedes E-Class. Two distinct and separate reasons are holding Audi back of earning the rating, firstly the cabin is really attractive, and ergonomically it is amazingly similar to old A6. Once Audi’s MMI control system was state of the art but now the Mercedes has caught up and BMW’s iDrive is evidently ahead. If you look inside the cabin of an E-class, you surely will know what you are missing, A6’s cabin is stylish and svelte but it feels one stop short of what real luxury is. Second one is pretty serious and concerns manual car’s pedals.

There are three Audi A6 diesel engines available, a 3.0-litre V6 with 201bhp and front wheel drive, a 3.0-litre V6 with 242bhp and Quattro four-wheel drive reaches 0-62mph in just 5.1 second. Third one is a potent 3.0-litre BiTDi with 309bhp four wheel drive. Only one Audi A6 petrol engine is available in 3.0-litre V6 with 296bhp quattro drive which reaches 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds. The ride is pretty good – not Mercedes good but competitive in class. brakes are progressed too, now have the feeling of meaty pedal. Generally the standard equipments are quite impressive but the standard satellite navigation comes as a bonus in this class.
