Travellers who are planning to visit Peru must include the Inca trail machupicchu in their itinerary as no tour of Peru will complete without this visit. The Inca citadel of Machu Picchu is believed to have been built as a retreat for the Inca rulers in the 15th century. After the Spanish conquerors wiped out the Incas, the citadel fell into ruins and was considered lost to the world until centuries later in1911 when a Yale professor, Hiram Bingham rediscovered it. It became the archaeological find of the 20th century and the Inca trail became the most famous hotspot of Peru.

Many theories abound about the reason for the construction of the Inca citadel. Apart from the theory of it being a royal retreat, it may have been an important astronomical site or an observatory, a ceremonial centre or a seat of learning. Although it is possible to go to Machu Picchu by train, the adventure and the spectacular beauty unfolding on the trail make trekking to Machu Picchu an unforgettable journey. The 4 days trekof around 45kms takes visitors through high peaks and cloud forests. Many Inca ruins can be observed on the way before ...
... the final arrival at the Lost City of the Incas. This citadel is probably the most well-known panorama in the world and a most important archaeological site. It is a complex maze of stone palaces and temples built on bright green terraces and amidst the beautiful mountain range of the Andes. Cloud forests soon give way to sheer cliffs and a sharply descending canyon with the rushing Urubamba River far down below. The site is awe-inspiring and its majestic beauty never fails to impress any visitor.

The Inca trail leads through the Dead Woman’s pass along with ancient Inca routes and passing through the cloud forests and Inca ruins, trekkers soon reach the Sun Gate or Intipunku where the whole vista of Machu Picchu lies before the visitor’s eyes. It is considered to be one of the most exciting and thrilling viewpoints in the world and the vantage point to see Machu Picchu in all its glory. The Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary has 250 species of orchids as well as innumerable species of birds. The almost extinct and rare spectacled bear is the star of this sanctuary. The return journey is by train to Cusco where it reaches by the afternoon.

The trail is rated as moderate and any reasonably fit person can undertake the trek without much difficulty. Nevertheless, it is quite challenging as altitudes of almost 4200m have to be crossed. Acclimatization is very crucial and for those coming in from sea level, it is prudent to spend at least two days in Cusco before beginning the trek.

The Lost City of the Incas is one of the wonders of the world and the Inca trail Machu Picchu is considered amongst the topmost treks for its history and its sheer majestic beauty.
