The wood shredder is a machine that is used to shred or chip large pieces of wood into smaller reusable pieces. The shredded wood pieces are usually 1 inch to 2 inches in size. The wood shredder was first invented by Peter Jensen in 1884 and became the main business of his company.

wood shredder machines, being portable can be mounted on framed wheels that can be towed behind a van or a truck. The power of these machines can be provided by either an internal or an external engine. Internal combustion engines provide power from 3 horsepower to 1000 horsepower.

All machines have a hopper through which wood chunks are introduced. The shredder mechanism consists of sharp blades which shred the wood chunks into smaller useable pieces. Most machines are equipped with grooved rollers at the point where the wood is being fed into the machines. These rollers act as safety nets and enable the machine to reverse its motion to release any unwanted object (clothing or even human body parts) that is caught between the blades.

The shredded wood pieces ...
... are either collected in separate bins attached to the machines or simply on the ground. These are then passed through picking stations, where the wood is sorted and separated to be put to various uses. It can be used as a ground cover or even be used during paper manufacturing. Shredded wood is also used as bio fuel by wood residue burn plants. Therefore, the onus is on the picking stations to ensure that all contaminants are removed manually to deliver a clean end-product. Moreover, they also need to check that the shredded wood to be sent as bio fuel chips do not contain pressure treated wood or plastic pieces.
