Turmeric (Curcuma longa), a member of the ginger family, is a traditional Indian curry spice. It is also used as a yellow food coloring and has been used in traditional medicine. Curcumin, a substance found in the spice turmeric, has long been used in Asian medicine to treat maladies ranging from heartburn to arthritis. Now some recent research suggests that Curcumin may help prevent or treat cancer. Its anticancer effect is mainly mediated through induction of apoptosis. In cancer research, Curcumin is known as "interrupting the cell cycle." Curcumin can stop cancer in its earliest stages, long before it's detectable. It works at the level of the cell. One of the things it does is to tell damaged cells to self-destruct so they won't keep multiplying. Curcumin does not induce apoptosis of healthy cells, only cancerous ones. It identifies cancer cells by their abnormal chemistry. Curcumin increases the production of proteins that cause immune cells to proliferate and reduces the production of proteins that destroy immune cells.
Curcumin is thought to have antioxidant properties, which means it may decrease swelling and inflammation. It's being explored as a cancer treatment because inflammation appears to play a role in cancer. The immune system of patients with advanced cancer is significantly weakened, mostly because the main cells that fight off tumors either cannot proliferate anymore or have died off. Curcumin was shown to have anti-tumor activity. Curcumin has been studied for use in treating or preventing colon, skin and breast cancers.
