Do you know that polyurethane is widely acknowledged as one of the most durable yet easy-to-apply protective wood finishes? And, it is available in both oil-based and water-based. However, there are differences in the way both versions of polyurethane are applied on various surfaces.

Polyurethane dispersions facilitate the formulation of high performance coatings, adhesives and inks. And, since dispersions are both waterborne polyurethane and fully reacted, they can easily be formulated into low VOC coatings, that too with low toxicity ratings. Once you apply them on the surfaces, film formulation takes place by evaporation of water to yield tough, resilient films.

It is to be noted that polyurethane dispersions can be used on their own, or in combination with other polymer lattices, e.g. acrylic emulsions. Small additions of cross-linking agents may be used to upgrade chemical / solvent resistance.

Working with Polyurethanes:

You can stir a can of polyurethane, ...
... but never shake it. Why? You shouldn’t shake the cane because that’ll introduce numerous bubbles into the product that will show up in your final finish. Instead, stir the product gently but thoroughly before each use.

Always make sure to work in a clean but well-ventilated area. You may choose to thin oil-based polyurethanes with mineral spirits or naphtha, but for most applications, this will not be necessary.

Though there may be hundreds of companies in the market, you just make sure you get these products from a trusted maker so you get best-quality. Search through Google, and you’ll see numerous companies popping out on your desktop/laptop screen; now, it’s your job to wade through all this, and find an ideal company for your specific requirements. A few minutes of online research will help you find a lot of useful information.

In case you experience drips or runs while applying it on some vertical surfaces, just remove it with a sharp razor blade, followed by a sanding to feather in the blemish.

Last but not the least, do conduct a thorough market research before you decide on a particular seller or its product; take your time to browse as many products as you can, so as to get the best-quality product at the best prices. However, don’t buy it just because you’re getting it cheap; always go with an experienced, professional company which has been around for years, and can be trusted for quality products. Polyurethane has always been in demand for its multi-usages, and it’ll always be.
