Using a dedicated server to run your website will give you an entire server of resources, as well as hardware that is completely customizable and will let you run any software or operating system you wish. When you choose dedicated web hosting, you have an entire server – full of a number of resources – that is entirely yours. No other websites will be on it, and it will contain no other data except that which you put on it. However, there is a downside. Dedicated servers are the most expensive that you can find on the market. And for this reason, they’re not for everyone.

So, who are dedicated servers right for?

In order to determine whether or not a dedicated server is right for you and your website, you need to compare the costs of renting or leasing one, with the revenue that your website generates for you. If you have thousands of people coming to your website every single day, you’ll need a lot of bandwidth to support that traffic. And in that case, a dedicated server might be a good option. And, if you’re going to be using subdomains and parked domains in order to market and promote your website, ...
... you will also probably need a dedicated server. These options are not usually available on shared services.

If your website is also very large, and contains an immense amount of data, you will also probably need a dedicated server to store that data. With a shared server, and often even with VPS, you’ll only be allotted a small amount of resources. And these will most likely not be enough to run your site.

Typically, it’s medium-sized businesses, large businesses, and huge corporations that find they need a dedicated server; and also find they’re worth the added cost. Because these websites are often huge, have a lot of traffic flowing into them every day, and are also often used as e-commerce sites for doing direct business, using a dedicated server is usually the only option for ensuring the site is always up and running smoothly.

However, if you’re only going to be running a personal blog, or you’ve just started your small business’ website and it’s not that well-known yet, another option such as shared hosting, VPS hosting, or cloud hosting might be a better alternative. Personal websites usually don’t need anything more than a shared service; while businesses should usually try to avoid the instability of shared web hosting and instead opt for either of the latter two.

Deciding whether or not you need a dedicated server for your website can be relatively easy. Simply look at the objective of your website and what you’re going to require from it, and compare that with the cost of dedicated hosting. If you feel it’s worth it, then go ahead and start realizing all of the benefits this type of hosting has to offer. If it’s not worthwhile to you right now, consider using VPS or cloud hosting, and think about upgrading to a dedicated server in the future.
