The Coast to Coast walk was envisioned by the late great Alfred Wainwright. It is a 190 mile continuous walking route which stretches all the way from St Bees, in Cumbria, on the West Coast to Robin Hoods Bay on the East Coast.

The route takes walkers through no less than three national parks, making it one of the most stunning walks in the country and, indeed, the world. So, it is not surprising that Coast to Coast walks have become increasingly popular in recent years.

Coast to Coast walks are a great way to explore the country and many of the natural gems it has to offer but it is important that anyone embarking on Coast to Coast walks is fully prepared for the journey ahead.

Below are just a few things to consider before heading off on a Coast to Coast walk:

Route

The first thing you will need to do is plan your route. Think carefully about how much walking you can realistically do and how much time you will need to do it before you make arrangements. You do not have to do the entire walk – just pick the stretch which suits you best and enjoy your time on the coastal path.

Accommodation

When ...
... you aren’t busy walking and exploring everything that the coast has to offer, you will need somewhere to recuperate and give your poor feet a rest. This means booking accommodation for each leg of your journey.

You may wish to consider booking your walking holiday through a self-guided holiday company who specialise in coast to Coast walks. They will take care of sorting out quality accommodation for you, so you don’t have to spend a lot of time searching the internet or, ringing around to find suitable places to stay.

Kit

When embarking on Coast to Coast walks, it pays to come prepared. There are several items which will make your walking holiday more enjoyable. Most importantly, you will need a good pair of walking boots which are comfortable and supportive.

A map, compass, torch, whistle, first aid kit, sensible clothing which is warm and waterproof and a water bottle are all essential items to pack too.

By following these few tips, you should have a successful and enjoyable holiday walking the beautiful Coast to Coast route.
