Himachal Pradesh Travel Guide
Himachal Pradesh is a land locked state in Northern India .The word Himachal Pradesh means “In the lap of the abode of snow”. Himachal Pradesh is justifiably famous for its natural beauty and attracts large numbers of tourists every year.
Where is Himachal Pradesh?
Himachal Pradesh is one of the Northern Indian states. This state is bordered by the states of Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab and shares an international border with Tibet .The state is famous for its apple orchards and winter tourism destinations like Shimla, Auli and Manali. The topography of this state has been successfully exploited with a large number of hydro electricity schemes, and Himachal Pradesh supplies surplus power to its neighbouring states.

... Hinduism is the major religion and languages spoken in this state are Hindi, Punjabi, Lahauli and various Indo Tibetan dialects. Himachal Pradesh was a major trade hub on the Indo-Tibet trade route and there are large settlements of Tibetans all over the state. The Dalai Lama settled at Macleodganj, Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh after fleeing from Tibet in the 1950’s.
Himachal Pradesh –Culture and People
The people of Himachal are an amalgam of Brahmins, Rajputs, Kinnauri, Tibetans, Lahauli and Gujjars. The crafts of this region include wood work and wool work. Weaving of Himachali caps, Kullu and Pashmina shawls are a cottage industry , the products of which are in demand the world over. Kangra paintings are a collector’s item.
Himachal Pradesh – Tourism
Himachal Pradesh has a wide variety of hill stations like Shimla, Auli, Kulu, Manali, Mashobra and Naldehra which have been frequented by tourists since the 18th century. The temples of the Kangra valley draw a large number of tourists.
River rafting on the Beas, Chenab rivers, Para gliding in the Kangra valley, trekking and mountain cycling are adventure tourism activities which are very popular.
Himachal Pradesh: Getting There
The hilly terrain of the state makes it difficult to have rail connectivity. The tourist can travel to major towns by road, using Chandigarh, the nearest airport as the base. Himachal Pradesh has a good network of state transport and public transport buses to tourist destinations like Shimla, Dalhousie, Kulu, Manali and Chamba.
