Great Acting Classes, Los Angeles
I recently returned home from a trip to Los Angeles, and I have to say, it was worth every penny for my kids and I to be out there. We stayed with my sister for the summer, and took a number of acting classes. Los Angeles is a wonderful place to study acting- right there by Hollywood, the enthusiasm for the craft was everywhere. Just walking down the street, you could feel it. One of the biggest reasons we were out there, other than to spend some time with family, was so that my children could take kids acting classes. Their selection of acting classes for teens and children was absolutely amazing. I was very impressed by the quality of instruction that they received.
One of the ways I knew that they were really absorbing the Stanislovski method into their brains was, when one night at dinner, they began to vocalize their actions as if there were trying to decide how to act based on the method they had been learning in their kids acting classes. Not only were they hilarious to listen to, but I was very impressed at the reasoning skills that they had picked up. One night, my son Kevin was pretending that he was ...
... a character in a play. He stopped, halfway through his one-man play and said "Wait, I need to figure out where my character is going." His sister jumped right in with questions like: what is your character's objective? What stands between your character and his goal? What actions will your character take? Once they had worked all of this out, his one-man play continued, revived with his new-found sense of understanding.
Now, when an actor works with a character, they usually are working off of a script, not just ad-libbing at the dinner table in an effort to avoid being told to do the dishes, take out the compost, or some other chore. The same line of questions is used, however, in that in order to accurately portray a character's emotions and inspirations, an actor must come to understand and even experience for his or herself what the character is thinking and experiencing.
Although Los Angeles was the perfect introduction to acting classes, I think my kids will be just as happy taking kids acting classes, and maybe eventually some acting classes for teens right here in our hometown. I've found a teacher who uses the same method, so that if they ever venture back out to LA for a summer, they'll be able to join right back in at the school where they got their start.
