Dealing With Social Phobia
As humans, we are social people. Unfortunately, many people have social anxiety or phobias about certain social situations. This fear can greatly affect the individual’s life as these individuals constantly feel like those around them are constantly evaluating them. This makes a lot of people fear going out into social situations and prevents them from having the fun times that many have through the enjoyment of people around them. Not only does social anxiety affect individuals mentally, but it also can greatly affect them physically. Some of the numerous physical signs include excessive sweating of the hands, intense facial blushing, increased heart rate, and difficulty speaking.
Even though social anxiety is a terrible problem for many, fortunately, there are solutions to help ease social anxiety. These solutions can help individuals greatly start enjoying life again. The fear and prolonged avoidance of various social situations can interfere with the person’s career and social functions. These individuals typically have great trouble achieving the level of academic and social status that they deserve as a result of social phobia. The strongest factor is that of public speaking. That alone seems to be the root cause of much social anxiety. Public speaking is feared by most but for those with social anxiety it seems to be like the death penalty. One of the tactics to get over the common fear of public speaking is to do it a lot. Unfortunately that is just too hard of a task for those with social anxiety. Fortunately however, those with social anxiety can overcome it and even prevail to become amazing speakers with some hard work and effort.
Most of the time, social phobia typically starts in the mid-teens; however, it can start in childhood. The onset of it may follow a stressful experience, or it may start gradually as the person goes through humiliating experiences in life. Social phobia usually is a lifelong problem, which may attenuate in severity later in adulthood. Social phobia appears to be prevalent more in 1st degree biological relatives.
Social anxiety is normal among humans, but how can you tell when it is too much and when you should seek professional help? Most people will say that that threshold comes when the anxiety is affecting the way you live day-to-day life. Sure there are going to be situations where you are socially anxious and fearful to speak in front of peers and strangers, but if it ever comes to the point where a simple night out is looming task due to excessive fear, you may want to see somebody about social anxiety.
