Nominal Ordinal Interval
Introduction to nominal ordinal interval data:
The data should be divided into 4 types. They are,
Nominal
Ordinal
Interval
Ratio
Nominal: The other name of nominal data is categorical. The permissible statistics of the nominal data is mode and chi-square.
Ordinal: The permissible statistics of the ordinal data is median.
Interval: The permissible statistics of the interval data is mean, standard deviation.
Ratio: The permissible statistics includes the interval scales and also the following. Geometric mean, coefficient of variation and logarithms.
Nominal Data Definition:
Nominal Data:
Nominal category uses some labels. In this nominal data scale there are some valuable operations which are equal to set membership. This nominal data scale provides labels or names for certain characteristics.
The variables used in nominal data are referred as categorical variables. The easy naming system can differentiate the nominal data items. In this the items which are having something common should be measured. These nominal items have some numbers which ...
... is to be assigned to them. For instance, gender is a nominal scale variable. That is we can find if the gender of a person is M or to count the number of females in a sample. Thus nominal scales are qualitative rather than quantitative. Frequency distribution are generally used to examine data measured on a nominal scale.
Ex: A set of states
Ordinal Data Definition and Example:
Ordinal data:
In this ordinal scale the numbers which are assumed to certain objects or some events is used to represent the rank or order of assessing entities. Some of the names which are used in ordinal scale are median, bad and good. The ordinal scale represents the central tendency by mode or median. But it cannot define the mean.
Ex: In a race the first, second and third place of students.
Interval Data Definition and Example:
Interval Data:
Interval data is an integer which is measured over the scale. In this every position is equidistant from one another. Hence the distance measured between two set of pairs should be equal.
This interval data should be used in psychological experiments. It can measure the attributes over the scale among two extremes. It can measure on scale. Hence it is considered as quantitative.
Ex: Level of rating from 1 to 1000.
Ratio Definition and Example:
Ratio scale:
In this ratio scale the numbers should be compared with another number by using multiplication. That is in this ratio scale we can find the ratio between two numbers. The ratio should be allowed to multiply or divide. This ratio scale is considered as quantitative because it can perform measures on scale.
Ex: Children age
Examples of Nominal Scale:
Ex 1: For example, consider some people in which 19 person got no response mail order,25 people got mail order and purchase the product and pay and 18 people got mail order and purchase the product but return the product and 5 purchase and neither pay nor return. Find the nominal scale of how may persons purchase and neither pay nor return and what are the division is used.
Sol:
In the above example the divisions are:
no response
purchase and pay
purchase but return the product
purchase and neither pay nor return
In which 5 people purchase and neither pay or not.
Ex 2: In a class of students 7 girls and 3 boys like English, 2 girls and 5 boys like Algebra, 10 girls and 5 boys like geometric. Find how many girls present in a class.
Sol:
Given:
Like English: 7 girls and 3 boys.
Like algebra: 2 girls and 5 boys
Like geometry: 10 girls and 5 boys
Therefore, total number of girls in a class is: 7+2+10=19.
