In recent times, the veiling of Muslim women with the Burqa has kicked up a lot of controversy and discussion among the free thinking communities of the world. The modern western society considers the burqa as an impediment to the emancipation of women and feels that the radical Muslim community may be taking their society one step backwards, while the rest of the world is progressing towards a broader and liberated mind frame. They find the complete veiling of a woman’s body an impingement on her basic rights and see the burqa as a prison in which the Muslim woman is forced to live her entire life.

Why Do Muslim Women Wear the Burqa? Is it just the radical surge in Islamic fanaticism of the contemporary ages that has made the Muslim men preferring their women folk to be clad in this attire, or is it a choice made out of piety, by the religious and self respecting Muslim woman?

The history of Burka clothing in west Asian communities goes back a long time before the modern fanaticism in Islam started to originate. Most of the ancient religions in the world considered the veiling of a woman’s body and head a ...
... sign of modesty and dignity and most of the religious books like the Bible, the Torah and the Quran have references and strict advocations as to how men and women should conduct themselves in the public with modesty in attire and behavior, in the goal towards holding up moral values in society and family life. Most of the ancient religions like Islam, Judaism and Christianity had their origins in the Middle Eastern provinces, and all these religions and civilizations shared common ancestral roots. Their social set ups were identical and the code of values were based on the same principles of piety and modesty and subservience to the will of god, whether they called him Allah or Jehovah.
The veil is certainly not a new introduction to modern Islamic society. Different forms and levels of veiling were prevalent in almost all ancient civilizations and even in the modern times women in lot of the eastern Orthodox Christian and Jewish societies still don the veil and cover their heads while they attend mass in churches or synagogues or even at home during prayer. Not only in the Asian societies, but even in the old European societies, the veiling of women’s faces or heads in the public were accepted as customary and considered a symbol of their modesty and high social standing. Mourning widows and brides appeared in public only in sheer veils that partially covered their visages and it was only in the past century that they completely did away with these conventions.

Despite the heated discussions and even banning of this controversial attire in public by some of the modern European countries and certain educational institutions in the USA, citing the reason that the veiling of women, whether it be the Hijab, the Niqab, or the Burqa is a restraint on women’s freedom and progress towards equality or that the display of religious symbols in public is an impediment towards the collective progress of a nations intellectual development, more and more Islamic societies have been seen to be taking on these symbols as a mark of their piety and as a sign of acceptance and support to the teachings of the prophet and contemporary religious leaders.
