Arunachal Pradesh Travel Guide
Nestled among the majestic Himalayan Mountains, Arunachal Pradesh is an Indian state to which references are found in Indian literature as ancient as the Mahabharata and the Puranas.
Arunachal Pradesh is located on the north-eastern side of India, bordered by Bhutan, Myanmar and the Tibet region on its north and the Indian states of Nagaland and Assam in the south.
Home to about 26 tribes and numerous sub-tribes, Arunachal Pradesh has a culture that is distinct and colorful. The people of this state belong to the Mongoloid race and live in small tribal villages, celebrating a variety of festivals around the year. Arunachal Pradesh is well known for its arts and crafts that include mask-making, carpet-making, cane and bamboo crafts, wooden carvings and weaving. It is the women who do the weaving to create beautiful combinations of color and design in the ...

Places to Visit
For those with a religious bent of mind, Arunachal Pradesh offers pilgrimage centres and shrines such as the Tawang Monastery that is about 400 years old or Parasuramkund which is believed to be the place where Sage Parasuram is believed to have bathed to cleanse himself from the sins of eliminating tyrannical kings. Places such as Malinithan and Itanagar are famous for the archaeological excavation sites that provide insight into the history of the state.
However, the greatest gift that Arunachal has to offer is its natural beauty of the lofty, snow-clad mountains, picturesque valleys and the beautiful flora and fauna that are on display at several places such as Selsa Pass, which is considered to be the second highest motorable pass in the entire world. Areas such as Tipi and Sessa are home to several rare species of orchids that are chronicled in the on-site orchid museum, whereas the Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary has a variety of wildlife ranging from the tiger and elephant to the sambar and hornbill. Arunachal Pradesh also has some of the country’s most scenic and cool hill stations such as Sangram, Palin, Nyapin and Koloriang.
An Adventurer’s Haven
Arunachal Pradesh with its dense forests and gushing rivers is an adventure sports haven and you can choose from a grueling trek in the Tawang Chu region and river rafting in the Siang or the Kameng, Dibang and Subansiri regions.
Travel Tips
The state of Arunachal Pradesh is a Protected Area, and therefore, tourists need to obtain an Inner Line Permit (or a Protected Area Permit if you are not an Indian citizen). You may obtain this permit from the offices of the Secretary, Government of Arunachal Pradesh or the Deputy Commissioner of the district to which you are traveling. Alternatively, you may procure the permit from the Liaison Office or Resident Commissioner’s Office at New Delhi, Guwahati, Calcutta or Shillong. Foreign tourists should get in touch with the Indian Government’s Home Ministry or the Home Commissioner of the Arunachal Pradesh Government at Itanagar, the state capital.
