Playing violent video games can increase a person’s aggressive thoughts, beliefs, feelings and behavior; according to recent studies appearing in “Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.” Furthermore, violent video games can be more harmful than violent television and movies because they are interactive, more engrossing and require the player to identify with the aggressor, says the researchers. Psychologists are of the opinion that young men who are habitually aggressive may be especially vulnerable to the aggression enhancing effects of repeated exposure to violent games. The other study reveals that even a brief exposure to violent video games can temporarily increase aggressive behavior in all types of participants.

Another study states that playing a violent video game can increase aggression, and when a player keeps thinking about the game, the potential for aggression can last for as long as 24 hours! Students, who reported playing more violent video games in junior and high school levels, were engaged in more aggressive behavior. Although, computers are an integral part of our lives, especially youth, as they are engaged in various forms of computer usage, but using computers constructively, can lead to positive development in their overall personality. In the modern era, each and every student is found working on their own PCs, or laptops, either doing home-assignments, researching on Internet, completing college project, social networking with friends, playing games or simply web-surfing. Thus, parents have to buy them either a new PC or refurbished laptop, according to their budget. But, the parents must limit the computer usage timing for their child and monitor their kid’s online activities!

It is found that violent video games provide a platform for learning and practicing aggressive solutions to conflict situations, which can be used by them when real-life conflict situations arise, in future. Playing violent video games, like Doom, Wolfenstein 3D or Mortal Combat can raise aggressive thoughts, feelings and behavior. Playing cool and educational games surely increase the IQ level of kids but playing violent video games has always been known to contribute to the increase in aggression among players of such game. Experimental studies show that violent video games cause people to behave more aggressively, but how long does the effect last? In most experiments, the aggression is measured immediately after game-play.

The experiment was based to test the long-term casual effects of violent video game on aggression. The participants played a violent or non-violent game for 20 min. Within each group, half pondered about the game. The next day, participants competed with apparent opponent on a competitive task in which the winner could punish the loser with painful noise blasts through headphones. Results showed that violent video games increased aggression 24 hours later, but only among men who thought about the game. Musing keeps aggressive thoughts and behavioral tendencies active.
If players ruminate or reflect about the violence in the game, the aggression-stimulating effects of the game persist long after it has been turned off!
