Although you may know the rules of poker down to the last detail, you will not be successful if you don't know what good poker hands are and which ones beat out others in a Gemran poker game. The rankings attributed to the good hands come from the probability of a player getting this hand when the cards are dealt. The rankings of poker hands from best to worst are:

- Royal Flush. There are only four possibilities of having this hand. It consists of Ace, King, Queen, Jack and ten all of the same suit. It is very rare for a player to get this hand and rarer still for more than one player to have the same hand in the same round. This is the highest hand and cannot be beat.

- Straight Flush. The second highest hand in poker is a straight consisting of any five cards in sequence in the same suit.

- Four of a kind. Even though you have five cards, if four of them are of the same rank, then you disregard the fifth card and win with four of a kind. The higher the rank of the cards, the better the hand. The best hand of this kind is four Aces.

- Full House. In this poker hand, you have three cards of one rank ...
... and two of another. Of course, this also depends on the rank to determine whether or not you win against another player with a Full House. A hand that consists of three tens and two fives beats a hand that consists of three eights and two sevens because you take the highest rank in the three cards.

- Flush. This poker hand consists of five cards of the same suit. It is different from the Royal Flush in that the cards have to be in sequence for this hand, but in a Flush you can have any five cards as long as they are all the same suit.

- Straight. This hand consists of five cards in sequence, but they do not have to be of the same suit. The hand could contain all four suits or only two or three.

- Three of a kind. As the name of this poker hand suggests, you have three cards of the same rank.

- Two pair. In this hand, you have two pairs of cards. If two players have the same hand, then the winner is the player with the highest ranking pair.

- One pair. This hand is one pair of cards of the same rank.

- High card. This hand does not contain any of the hands listed above and the cards are all unrelated. The winner in this case is the player that has the highest card.

To become a successful poker player in Germany, in addition to knowing which poker hands beat the others, you need to have a sense of what makes a good starting poker hand. Most players have certain requirements that their initial cards must meet in order for them to place a bet and stay in the game. You would not for example, place a bet with a four and a nine, but you may decide to stay in the game with a four and a five especially if they are suited because there is a possibility you may get a straight flush. Most players though like to see picture cards in their hole cards.
