Telecom is a short term used for telecommunication. The term is also used for any telecommunication company. It is a general term used to describe the vast line of technologies like mobile phones, land lines, satellite phones etc that send information over distances. It is one of the largest and fastest growing industry in India. It is a widely followed career option as technology has become vital in today’s life. Being called the “Lifeline of IT, Information Technology Industry”, reportedly India has over 600 million mobile subscribers and this number is expected to reach 1.01 billion by 2014. After the coming of technologies like 3G and WIMAX, this sector has created tremendous job opportunities. There is a growing demand for qualified and skilled professionals who possess enormous amount of technical knowledge in telecom.

The basic qualification needed to become a Telecommunication engineer is 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with good percentage of marks in aggregate. BE / B.Tech courses are of 4 years duration and the post graduate diploma, ME/ M.Tech and MBA courses are of 2 years. The duration ...
... of the diploma courses are 1 year and a certificate course in the field takes 3 months to complete. So, courses in this field ranges from certificate and diploma courses to post graduate degrees. Some popular courses offered in telecommunications are- Understanding and Designing Data Networks; Understanding Optical Networks like SDH, SONET, DWDM; Understanding Wireless Networks (GSM, CDMA, 3G); Understanding Next Generation Networks (NGN) and Broadband Technologies etc.

Some Indian telephone giants Reliance communications, Bharti Airtel, etc recruit well qualified telecom engineers. Presently, the telecom industry is considering freshers also for jobs along with experienced engineers due to the overwhelming growth of this sector and a growing requirement of manpower. So, the sector offers freshers a starting salary of Rs 300,000 to Rs 500,000 per annum to lure them. Experienced professionals can get even larger amounts Rs 600,000 to 1,200,000 per annum.

One can start to work as an engineer in this sector. He can be in various segments like in the technology field, in the techno commercial team or can shift to the busi-ness development. For example, he can be a software engineer and grow to the highest level of a chief technical officer.

There are numerous opportunities existed in government sector also. Certain government organisation that recruit E&C professionals are Indian Railways,BSNL, DRDO, IES Indian Army, etc
