Don't Look The Other Way: Sponsor A Child In India

Whoever comes to India for the first time is shocked by the sight of hundreds and thousands of malnourished and scrubby-looking children approaching taxis, and auto-rickshaws at every red light. Begging for a rupee, snatching half-emptied bottles of soda or a banana from the hands of careless pedestrians. Their hunger and pleading has become a sad part of the everyday-routine for many Indians.

Everyone knows about the dangerous and cruel practices exercised on young children in the underground world of Mumbai in order to make their begging more profitable. Severe physical mutilation is common. But even those children that remain unharmed by criminal organizations still suffer heavily from the life on the street that they are forced to live. They sleep under ragged mosquito-nets on the hard ground in front of local train stations. Their scarce dinners cooked on an open fire at the side of the road while a few meters away gigantic shopping malls are under construction. Many a mother sends their children out for begging because she does not see any better perspective for them.

... few rupees, euros, or dollars can make all the difference to enable these children to start a new and better life. If you sponsor a child in India, you help whole families to break out of a vicious circle of begging, poverty and the cruel life of the Indian streets.

But it is not only money that makes a difference. The children we talk about have experienced great ignorance and disinterest in their fates by the majority of people they meet throughout their lives. They know that society won't give them much of a chance rise up out of the dust they were born in. Experiencing real interest in their fates also helps the children. If you sponsor a child, you can write to them or a social worker in connection to the families that you support. The children will know that somebody apart from their own family actually cares for them.

And if you feel that you don't have the money to support a child in need, think about whether you don't have at least a little bit of free time that you can spend making the world a better place for the weakest and most frail members of our society and join an NGO in Mumbai. There are plenty of opportunities to help also without spending a single rupee.
