Although steadily improving the job market in the United Kingdom is not exactly at its best right now and in honesty it does look like it will take a while to recover. Unfortunately there is nothing we here can do about improving the jobs market ourselves however we feel we can advise you on an alternative approach to improving your work/career prospects.

If the job market is weak and you are having to explore other options then the first port of call should be to look at yourself and see if you can improve on your existing skills or add in new ones to make you more attractive to an employer. Though to the same ends adding new strings to your bow could lead to different forms of earning opportunities such as freelance work or depending on the skills you could set up on your own and become self employed.

In this instance the skills we are referring to are your creative writing skills, skills which if developed and nurtured could lead you in to a life as published writer.

Creative writing courses don’t just open you up to the possibilities of full time fiction writing as a career but a number of other areas ...
... too. After studying a creative writing course it is also possible for students to find work writing short stories and occasionally scripts.

One key thing to remember here is that with a creative writing course and the goal of becoming a professional writer is that although it can be a tough market to crack it is none the less a market with some serious longevity. The written word is one thing we feel can be relied upon is the future of the written word and with it peoples love of a good story.

The recent surge in popularity of eReaders has again strengthened the position of literature in our lives and this has to been as a positive for anyone looking to make a living out of writing.

When researching a creative writing course to enrol upon there are some key support structures you should keep an eye out for as they will only aid your progress on the course;

• Support from tutors who have either studied the course themselves or are professional writers
• Cool off period after enrolment to ensure the course is right for you

The key message here is research; our advice would be to contact a provider (or providers) of writing courses discuss which of their courses is suitable in order to make sure that a creative writing is the right writing course for you.
