Though Vista has appeared in the scene Windows XP is still used by most people , but daily usage can corrupt your registries, some viruses can corrupt important Windows files which makes your Windows almost impossible to use in time. When this happens it's better to have a backup solution. And fortunately there are a few methods to do it, but I want to speak about Automated System Recovery Wizard (or ASR method) which comes with Windows XP Professional itself. The advantage is that you don't have to install any specific software and it is very easy to do.

The only tools you need are: a blank floppy disk, the Windows XP Professional installation disk and enough free space in a drive where you want to put the backup file.
The program is named BACKUP and you can find it in Start - Programs - Accessories - Backup. If you want a shortcut you just type Start - Run : ntbackup, which is the name of the this small program. After you start it and the welcome screen shows you select the Advanced Mode. In the Advanced Mode of the Backup Utility you have three options to choose: Backup Wizard, Restore Wizard and Automated System ...
... Recovery Wizard. The first option is if you want to make a more detailed selection of the directories and partitions, for example if you have special documents located elsewhere. The second is used to restore an already made backup. The third is used to create a backup of the entire Windows Operating System which is usually located on C:\ partition. If by any circumstance your system is placed elsewhere (another partition) you can select the first option and select manually from the drives.

If you select Automated System Recovery Wizard you are asked on the next screen only about the destination of the backup file where it would be created. You can choose any name and location you want. Important is to have enough free space on that partition. Finishing the Automated System Recovery Preparation Wizard is just the final stage. When you click on Finish the program will start processing and then the backup operation will start. The backup is made in one file which has the *.bkf extension. The process can take about ten minutes but could be also less. After the image of Windows file system is made you are asked to insert the floppy disk. This is used if your system fails to boot and you must boot from the Windows XP installation CD. The floppy will help you start the rescue program and restore your backup image.

After the completion you can remove the floppy from it's drive. You can also do scheduled automated backups with Schedule Jobs.
