One of the biggest benefits that comes with choosing VPS web hosting is that it’s extremely flexible, and it allows you to only pay for what you need. While a shared hosting plan might be very cheap, it might also not provide all the resources you need. And while the idea of a dedicated hosting plan that will provide you with an entire server is also attracitve, it’s also the most expensive option you could choose. VPS hosting though, is a happy medium between the two that will give you everything you need, without costing you a penny more than that.

In order to understand how to buy only what you need with VPS, you first need to understand how this type of web hosting works. When you sign up for a VPS plan, you’ll be given a certain amount of space within one large server. There will be other users and websites on that VPS, but your website will be virtually separated from them through a hypervisor. It’s this technology that allows you to run different operating systems, third party software, and even shut your portion of the server down without affecting any other websites on that same physical server.

However, ...
... VPS web hosting is similar to just about any other type of web hosting in the way that you will still pay to use only a portion of that server. And with that you will pay for, and be restricted to, a certain amount of resources. VPS web hosts will offer different packages with different levels of resources in them in order to accommodate your needs; but you also need to know what resources you’re currently using. This is the only way to ensure that you buy only what you need, and that you don’t spend money on something you’re not going to use.

If you can’t find the amount of resources you’re currently using in the control panel of your VPS, your web host will be able to tell you. And if you don’t yet have a website or web host, they will also be able to advise you on their different packages and which one will be best for you. Still, each web host will have multiple packages to choose from – and not all of them will be as competitive or comparable as others.

For this reason you need to know how much bandwidth and storage space you’ll need, as well as if there will be any software or drivers you’re going to want to install. Again, if you’re uncertain about any of this ask any of the web hosts that you’re considering. They’ll be able to fill you in on your technical needs and you can then take it from there using those numbers to compare different hosts.

The most important thing is that you have an idea of what you need, either through talking with professionals or from your current website; and that you match any VPS package as closely as possible to that amount. You can always upgrade if you need more resources for your site but until that time, you shouldn’t pay for more than you have to.
