Peripheral arterial disease or PAD is a disorder characterized by the reduced supply of blood to the legs, the arms and the internal organs of the body. The blood supply is partially or completely blocked, causing serious complications.

Causes of PAD:

• Atherosclerosis is a very common precursor of PAD. This condition occurs because of the deposition of fats inside the blood vessels, leading to the hardening or the narrowing of the arteries.

• People suffering from diabetes are at a higher risk of suffering from PAD.

• Men are more likely to suffer from this condition than women.

• People, who suffer from high blood pressure, are more likely to develop PAD.

• Injury to the blood vessels can also cause PAD.

• People having a family history of vascular diseases are at risk of suffering from PAD.

• An inactive or sedentary lifestyle can increase the risk of suffering from PAD.

• People suffering from blood clotting disorders are at risk of developing PAD.

Indications of PAD:

About half of the patients with peripheral arterial disease ...
... do not have any symptoms. The symptoms of this condition depend upon the parts supplied by the affected arteries. Pain in the legs or the thighs is the most common symptom of this condition. The pain is often greater on walking or while climbing stairs, and is less when taking rest. The pain is dull, cramping and intermittent. It is also felt as heaviness or tightness in the legs. The symptoms of PAD are often aggravated in winter. Some other commonly occurring symptoms of PAD are given below:

• Tingling and numbness in the feet
• Cramps and weakness in the feet
• Pain in the buttocks
• Burning sensations in the toes or the feet while resting
• Non-healing ulcers on the feet or the ankles
• Coldness of the extremities
• Dark patches on the skin of the feet
• Loss of hair from the skin of the legs
• Atrophy of the muscles of the feet
• Impotency
• Gangrene of the toes

Management of peripheral arterial disease:

Plavix is an efficient drug used for the management of peripheral arterial disease. It can also be used for the treatment of stroke, angina and myocardial infarction. The active component of Plavix is clopidogrel bisulfate.Plavix is an anti-platelet agent, which helps in reducing the symptoms of PAD by inhibiting the clotting of blood in the vessels.

Dosage of Plavix:

Patients can take Plavix in a dosage of 75 milligrams, once every day. Patients should contact their doctor to learn more about the correct dosage of this drug.

Side effects of Plavix:

The side effects of Plavix include abdominal pain, headache, muscle aches, chest pain, dizziness, liver failure and severe bleeding.

Peripheral arterial disease is a very common condition in the United States. This condition is the leading cause of disability among people above 50 years of age. Use of effective drugs such as Plavix can help in managing this condition in a safe and effective manner.
