In a very short time Google's Mobile Operating System (OS) Android has become the number one choice for Smartphones. It is currently the most popular Smartphone Operating System in the US and 2nd most used OS in the world, leaving behind iOS by Apple and Blackberry by RIM. Google's Android has overtaken Symbian and Windows mobile as well in terms of number of users. Research agencies across the world have confirmed this. But how did Android manage this in just a few years?

Various factors are responsible for its popularity but there are few most important ones that hold the main key to its success:

Android is free of cost :-

Since the day of its inception, Android has been available for free of cost. Google with its announcement had made it very clear that their operating system is free and will be free forever. This made the operating system a hot pick for manufacturers across the world and many initially adopted it for low cost Smartphones.

Thus, with many brains working on the system, newer and newer ideas are being incorporated, which in turn is helping in making Android the most preferred choice.

Android supports customization and modification :-

Users enjoy much needed flexibility and ease of use because manufacturers are now able to modify anything and everything they need to make the experience a pleasant one. Device manufacturers are free to modify and customize Android Operating System as per their needs, unlike Windows or any other mobile operating system. This has led to the development of HTC Sense UI by HTC, Motoblur by Motorola, TouchWiz by Samsung and many more. This is a reason why geeks love Android.

Android with variety of applications :-

With its free of cost and open source nature, Android attracted many programmers and developers and provided them the opportunity to show their skill and come up with newer applications for Android phones. All these innovation got a podium in the form of Android Market. Therefore, the Android users have a wide variety of applications to choose from and can customize their phones for a personal experience.

Although, Apple also offers the developers to create apps and load it on App Store but developers have to face problems while getting their application or game included into the App Store as Apple takes more than 2 weeks, on an average, for approving applications. In some cases, it might even take a month or more. For example, it took Apple a full one year to approve Google Voice app by Google. This is another reason why developers prefer creating applications for Android more than for any other OS.

Android Hardware :-

Google's Android is the first OS to boast dual-core processor powered phones. Phones such as Motorola Atrix, LG Optimus G2x, Samsung Galaxy S II etc. give a huge advantage to Android over other OS like Symbian, iOS etc. A better processor means a better power management system which is considered to be one of the most important buying factors among users.

In this way, Android opened numerous possibilities for both device manufacturers and application developers, while helping to reduce the cost of Smartphones, thus making them accessible to the common man.
Summing it up, Android has taken user experience to the next level while keeping the prices of Smartphones well within the reach of the common man, and that is why Android has become the number one choice among Smartphone users.
