Manipur Travel Guide
Tribals in the state form the majority of the entire population. Amongst the tribes the Meiteis constitute a large part of the tribal population in the state. Meiteilon was given the distinction of national language in India, in the year 1992. Some of the major tribes housed in the state are the Nagas, Paites and Kukis.
Manipur is an Indian state located in the northeastern region. The languages spoken in the state are Meitei Mayek, Meiteilon and several other dialects spoken by the tribals residing in the state. Imphal is the capital city of the state; the entire area covered by the state is 22, 347 sq. km.
The state of Manipur is located in the southeastern portion of the Asian subcontinent. It is enveloped by the northeastern states of Mizoram, Assam and Nagaland; the state also shares its international borders with Burma.

Some rare tourist attractions in the state are the floating islands at Loktak Lake, Shirui Lily located in the district of Ukhrul and Sangai. The game of Polo, which is generally associated with royal families, has its origins in Manipur.
The state has a massive population of immigrant people who range from all over the country. Some of the most popular tourist attractions in the city of Imphal are Leima Plaza, Paona Bazar, Gam-bir Sing Shopping Complex and more. The state houses the Shree Govindajee Temple, which is a cluster of majestic palatial buildings and havelis. The temple also has a courtroom and the deities worshipped by the devotees here are Subhadra, Jagannath and Krishna, Subhadra, Balaram and Radha Govinda.
Located at a distance of 48 km from the city of Imphal is the Keibul Lamjao National Park, which houses many endangered species. Nearly 17 species of mammals that are kept here are nearing extinction. There is a fish reservoir in the state, which is known as the Loktak Lake.
Getting There
The Imphal domestic airport is situated in the capital city and is very well connected to New Delhi, Kolkata, and northeastern states like Assam and Mizoram. The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, which is located in Guwahati, has flights to other metro cities like Chennai and Mumbai.
The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at Kolkata is the closest international airport that has flights to major cities in USA, Europe, Middle East and China. The closest railroad station is Dimapur railway station, which is well connected to rest of India; the railway station is situated 215 km from Imphal.
