BMW M6 Gets A Generous Dose Of M Feeling

M6 is the dark horse of the BMW M family. Cars like M3 and M5 made their own niches and whereas the M6 was just another big and fast coupe. This shouldn’t make us less excited about the launch of a brand new model especially when it has V8 engine and gives 522bhp. The new M6 looks meaner than its predecessor. The font grille supports the “M6” badge; there are also three air intakes and two fangs. The wheel arches are bold and have 19” alloy wheels underneath them, there is also an option for 20 inch wheels. At the rear, the bumper houses four exhausts.

The driving seats are very stylish and the steering wheel is an all new M specific with thin retro looking spokes. Under the bonnet is a 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 engine. It can rev up to 7,200 rpm. It also uses 30 percent less fuel than its predecessor, the 507bhp V10. Maximum rev is reached at just 1,500rpm but that time fuel saving is the last thing on your mind. The acceleration is so fast that it feels like you’re in a bullet train and the twin-clutch M DCT gearbox has fast upshifts. The characteristics of an ...
... M car are to be more than just a straight-line monster that is why it has host of settings for the chassis.

The gearbox, throttle, hydraulic steering, suspension and traction control have three modes each. It also has an option to choose between manual and auto gearbox. All of these combine to give 486 possible combinations. The most balanced setting came from the ‘Sport’ setting except for throttle response which is preferable in ‘Sport Plus’. The suspension can absorb most imperfections, level of grip is big and the steering wheel is very responsive. So in every aspect the M6 convertible is brilliant, but it feels like there’s some excitement missing.

It feels like any other fast car whereas an M car should offer something a little more. M6 is priced at £98,995. It goes from 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds. It has a limited top speed of 155mph and gives about 27.4mpg. The M6 offers a strong package with great handling, a storming engine and aggressive looks. Yet it doesn’t thrill you as much as an M car should. There is no doubt that M6 is the best engineered car in its class, having said that Jaguar XKR-S is more fun and a Maserati GranCabrio returns a thrilling experience.
