Natural Microbes Rescues Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common gastro intestinal disorders that afflict millions of people worldwide. Multiple mechanisms may be involved as a part of underlying pathophysiology of IBS. Some of the recent research updated listed concepts such as gut motility, small-bowel bacterial overgrowth, visceral hypersensitivity; microscopic inflammation can play a crucial role exaggerating IBS.
Probiotics are the beneficial microbes which are friendly and help in the smooth functioning of digestive system. Recently identified or recognised pathological findings have recognised and strengthened role of probiotics in the treatment of IBS. Scientific evidence of probiotics in the treatment of gastro intestinal disorders has been growing in the recent past. Probiotics role in pouchitis, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Clostridium difficile colitis, inflammatory bowel syndrome and irritable bowel diseases has occupied significance with the recent scientific updates.
Altering immune activity of the host, suppression of the growth and binding of pathogenic bacteria, improvement of the barrier function ...
... of the epithelium are believed to be the key mechanisms of probiotics in dealing with irritable bowel syndrome. Probiotics secrete short chain fatty acids and butyric acid which are essential to lower luminal pH, to produce bactericidal proteins and to nourish colonic enterocytes. Scientists believe that probiotics will likely have an emerging adjunctive therapeutic role in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome. The evidences available to date simultaneously provide interesting observations with few questions. There is growing evidence that B. infantis is becoming the frontrunner for treatment of irritable bowel syndrome.
Different probiotic combinations (most often including Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Streptococcus) have been evaluated in 772 patients and showed a significant effect in improving irritable bowel symptoms. Guyonnet and colleagues assessed 274 patients suffering from Irritable bowel syndrome. Fermented milk yogurt containing Bifidobacterium animalis was given for 6 weeks. Thirty patients in the treatment group experienced improved health related quality of life from discomforts of irritable bowel syndrome, improved blotting symptoms and stool frequency was also improved. The yogurt may have promotility benefits for the reduction of irritable bowel syndrome, bowel dysmotility as well.
The scientific evidence is to be more strengthened in terms of full therapeutical applications of probiotics not only in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome but also in most of the gastro intestinal disorders. However, it is unquestionable that probiotics are associated with healthy gut and thus it is encouraged to consume probiotic rich food substances to keep healthy.
