Daman and Diu is a Union Territory on the Western Coastline of India. Along with Goa and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu were still under Portuguese rule when in 1961, the Government of India used military force to liberate them and annex them to the Republic of India.
Where is Daman and Diu?
Daman: Daman lies on the Arabian Coastline. It is bordered by the Kolak and Kalai Rivers to the North and South, respectively. Gujarat lies to the East of Daman while on the west it is bordered by the Gulf of Cambay.
Diu: Diu is an Island off the Saurashtra Coast of Gujarat. The word Diu is believed to be derived from the Sanskrit word Dweep meaning island.

Diu is a small island. Its northern region is composed of tidal marshes and saltpans while the southern region is dotted with Sandy beaches, limestone cliffs and rocky coves.
Daman and Diu experiences very hot and humid summers and heavy rains during the monsoons. The mild winter months are the best time to visit this region.
Daman and Diu Culture
Daman and Diu actually lie within Gujarat geographically and share a similar heritage and culture. Gujarati is the main language of this region, followed by Marathi.
The main religion followed by the people of this region is Hinduism followed by Christianity and also Islam. The Portuguese influence in this area can be discerned from the many churches and the forts built by these European colonists. The Portuguese language is still spoken by a small section of the population.
Places to See
Daman and Diu are both coastal regions and have beaches that can give Goa a run for its money. The Churches and Forts built during the Portuguese rule are other major attractions.
Churches and Forts: The Fort of St. Jerome in Nani Daman, The Church of Our Lady of rosary in Moti Daman are two major tourist spots in Daman. The Gothic architecture and the carvings on these Portuguese Churches are fascinating. The Gandhi Park on Daman jetty, the lovely Devka Beach and the serene Jampore Beach are other attractions in Daman. There is also the enchanting Lake Garden of Satya Nagar Udyan. Its lovely promenades and fountains make it a favored tourist spot.
The Zampa gateway in Diu is famous for its lovely carvings, the Chapel inside and the artificial Zampa waterfall. The St. Paul’s Church and the Marwar Memorial are other noteworthy places.
The main Beaches in Diu include the Nagao Beach and the Gomptimala and Chakratirth Beaches.
Other interesting places to visit inand around Daman and Diu include the Forts of Nani Daman and Moti Daman, Mirasol Water park, Shaking Tower of Delwada, Kadaiya Lake Garden, Fortress of Panikhotta, Guptaprayag, Forte Do Mar, Diu Fort, Ghoghla Beach, Jallandhar Shrine, Somnath Mahadev Temple and the Gangeshwar temple.
How to Reach Daman and Diu
To reach Daman and Diu, you have to get to nearby major cities in Gujarat or Maharashtra.Diu has an airport in Nagao and is connected to Mumbai and Porbandhar by domestic airlines like Jet Airways .
Vapi in Gujarat is the nearest Railway Station to reach Daman. Delwara Railway Station is the Nearest to Diu.Diu is an island, but Daman can be reached by Road. NH 8 connects Daman with Mumbai, Vadodara and Ahmedabad.
