Jammu and Kashmir is India’s Northern most India .The state of Jammu and Kashmir is an amalgam of the Hindu state of Jammu with the Muslim-dominated Kashmir region. This state has been in the news recently more for its insurgency than for its incredible beauty.
Jammu and Kashmir is the Northernmost of Indian states. This state is bordered by the states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab and shares international borders with Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and China. This state is for the most part rocky with the Shivalik and Himalayan range of mountains.
The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir is Srinagar whilst the winter capital is Jammu. The state has 23 districts and is divided into Hindu Jammu, Muslim Kashmir and Buddhist Ladakh regions. Jammu and Kashmir –Culture and People
The Jammu region is predominantly Hindu while Kashmir is predominantly Muslim. The Ladakh valley has been traditionally Buddhist. The languages spoken are Hindi, Urdu, Dogri, Pahari and Pashto. Urdu is the official state language.
Jammu and Kashmir is famous for its Pashmina shawls, carpets and walnut wood work. The state is famous for its dry fruits and saffron. Tourism has reemerged as the major source of income in recent years as peace has returned to this verdant valley.

The houseboats on the Dal and Nagin lakes are world famous. Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam are world class skiing destinations. Ladakh is fast emerging as an international tourist destination the cold desert valleys of Dras and Zanskar have well preserved monasteries. Jammu has much to offer by way of the Bagh-i- Bahu Rose garden, Birla Temple and Jammu Palace.
Jammu and Kashmir: Getting There
The hilly terrain of the state makes it difficult to have rail connectivity. The tourist can travel to major towns by road, using Srinagar, the nearest airport as the base.Leh also has a serviced airport. Jammu and Kashmir has a network of state transport and public transport buses to tourist destinations although travel in Kashmir and Ladakh requires special permits.
