It allows immediate reflex reactions even to minor change in pressure. It's lips are so designed that they automatically effects a seal and reacts to pressure change. Materials Used In Chevron Packing

'V' seals: These are made of top quality rubber which is fabric, laminated and synthetic. It is designed in such a way that it gives the lip an automatic sealing action. For V rings, rubberized fabric is also used. Hard rubberized fabric and polyacetal are used in manufacturing of V rings. Smaller cross-section for sealing ability is also advantageous in these rings. These activated packing does not require any axial preload.

Header: It is made of materials which are hard such as acetal resin, nylon reinforced rubber, phenolic resin and fabric rubber. It is provided with radial slots at the top of the surface which helps in disbursing the pressure directly onto the lips of the adjacent rings.

Gland Ring: It mainly constitutes laminated fabric synthetic rubber which provides satisfactory support against the pressure applied on the rings which are V shaped, preventing the seal material from extrusion through the clearance gap during high pressure.
The header ring is also called as primary seal which is a bonded construction of rubberized fabric.

Properties of these rings: These standard rings are designed to withstand temperature ranging between -30 to +130 degree Celsius in oil. Using selected material, it is possible to adopt variety of extreme conditions.

Applications:

1. It is used in hydraulic presses, hydraulic cranes, plunger pumps, earth moving equipments and many more.
2. It is appropriate for robust applications, mainly used for replacement of parts in an old plant.

Chevron packing ('V' packing) combines same type of rubber, the in-between rings provide very effective sealing. The system is so manufactured that it can handle frequent pressure changes such as shock loading, oscillations, axial movements and still loading etc.
