Sleep Apnea Machines And Cpap Machines Gain In Popularity

Researchers at a Spanish hospital in early 2012 discovered females with obstructive sleep apnea who aren’t undergoing CPAP therapy will die from cardiovascular disease three and a half times more often than men.
Depending on the study you look at, men are typically about four times more likely to have sleep apnea, but this new statistic of more women sleep apnea patients dying from cardiovascular disease is making both men and women more aware of the possibility they have the condition and of the need to get themselves tested. If the result is positive, they turn to CPAP machines.
What is the likelihood of a person having sleep apnea? Some statistics indicate that more than 100 million people throughout the world have this condition, which causes oxygen deprivation to the brain, resulting in grogginess, lethargy and the inability to think sharply during the day. A sleep apnea machine will help prevent these symptoms – assuming people with the condition get diagnosed.
Researchers believe that among the suggested 100 million who have the disease, only 80% have ...
... been diagnosed. That means perhaps 80 million people worldwide are experiencing symptoms and a lowered quality of sleep and life and could be medically treated but don’t know it.
While the news for women is good in that fewer are likely to develop obstructive sleep apnea than men, another study, this one in August from researchers in Sweden, found that among 400 female test subjects between 20 and 70 years old, 50% had obstructive sleep apnea, indicating the need for therapy with a CPAP machine.
The same study found that among women with high blood pressure, 80% had sleep apnea, and among women who are obese, 84% had the condition. Among those obese women in the 55 to 70 age group, 31 percent had severe sleep apnea.
With news like the above, the public is becoming more aware of the dangers of obstructive sleep apnea and is learning about sleep apnea machines, which hook to a mask the patient wears over his or her nose and mouth or just the nose. Pressurized air is delivered into the nose, and this prevents the person’s throat from closing during sleep.
In summary, the dangerous statistic that female sleep apnea patients are three and a half times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than men may be contributing to the rise in popularity of the machines used to treat sleep apnea. More men develop the condition, but in women, left untreated, major problems can result.
