Cylinders of liquids, gasses and liquefied gasses are prevalent in various process environments. The cylinder, or drum, or tank may contain chemicals that are used in the water process industry. In the semiconductor industry, they may hold chlorine gas or any number of other gasses that are used for fabricating wafers of integrated circuits. The food industry utilizes these types of containers to hold a wide variety of ingredients, including flavorings, sweeteners, thickening agents, and almost any other type of additive.

It is, of course, important to keep track of the amount of material remaining in the cylinder. There are a number of different types of measuring devices. Some very simple types include a sight gage, allowing visual inspection. Another type of gage uses a float to determine the height of the material within the tank. Pressure gages may also be appropriate. But all of these methods have different types of flaws. The density of most materials varies with temperature and barometric pressure. Liquefied gas canisters are always at the same pressure until all of the material is depleted.

The most accurate ...
... method of monitoring the contents is to weigh the entire cylinder using a cylinder scale. This type of industrial scale must have a platform that is large enough for the tank to rest on it. The capacity is specified to exceed the maximum content weight in the cylinder, and the weight of the cylinder itself. The material of the platform is normally steel that is painted to avoid rust. Depending on the contents of the tank, it may be necessary to choose a platform scale constructed from stainless steel to avoid any corrosive spills or fumes.

The digital scale can include an Ethernet port. Special software allows the electronic scale to be monitored and controlled from any Internet connected device. A central office may monitor many cylinders at the same time using this method.
