Finding The Right Assisted Living Community

If you're finding yourself in the difficult position of helping your parents, in-laws, or some other relative find a community that provides assisted living, San Francisco certainly offers an array of options. Most of us, assuming we have the means to do so, want to see our loved ones in the best living arrangement possible, particularly later in life. Knowing that they are in a place that provides them everything they need, and addresses many of their wants as well, gives all parties involved the ultimate peace of mind. If you're reading this article, you likely have a difficult decision ahead of you. In order to be sure you're making the right choice, do as much investigating as you feel necessary. Here are just a few of the many questions you should be either asking yourself or every assisted living community director you interview:

1. Do you have to purchase a comprehensive resident package, or can you purchase services individually so you're not paying for things you don't need?
2. Is there are nurse that visits residents regularly? Or even better, is there a full time nurse on staff?

... facility offer a continuum of care? Any sort of guarantee?
4. Are there other services (medical or otherwise) available should they become necessary?
5. What is the turnover rate among staff? (Yes, such questions are perfectly acceptable.)
6. Is the assisted living community family owned?
7. Does the center have a good reputation in terms of senior living? (San Francisco residents, you know this is important.)
8. What is the quality of activities available to the residents? Are there a variety of wellness and fitness programs, as well as fun and interactive activities? (Ask to view a calendar of events and activities.)
9. Are meals prepared fresh, on-site, everyday?
10. Do they offer dining options all day long?
11. Do they have a diabetes menu? A low sodium menu? Other special menus?
12. Did you have a chance to taste the food? Were you impressed with the menu options?
13. Are the staff members at the facility properly trained? Appropriately dressed? Warm and friendly?
14. How do the staff members interact with the residents? Do they greet them by their first name? Treat them with respect?
15. Are the residents socializing and engaged in healthy, stimulating activities? Do they appear content and happy to be there?
16. Have you read any reviews? Received any recommendations? Do you know of other people's experiences with this particular facility?
