This vibrant town's history dates back to 930 A.D after appearing in Claudius Ptolemy's map of the east coast of Africa, together with the neighbouring towns of Malindi and Lamu. From then on, history has it that Mombasa has been visited on several other occasions by traders from the European countries of Portugal, The United Kingdom and also the Arabs, Persians and the Chinese traders from the Far East. It is said for example that the Arab and Persian traders began frequenting the coast by the end of the eighth century.
As a matter of fact, Mombasa's location on the east coast of Africa having proximity to the Arabian Peninsula is in itself proof that there was intense settlement by the Arabian traders.

As a matter of fact, the name ‘Mombasa' is derived the Arabic word ‘Manbasa' which means island of war.
Besides that, the Old Town has been left untouched over the years and is a true reflection of the style of architecture which was greatly influenced by Arabic settlement. Dhows which were brought by the Arabic traders are used on the by fishermen and sea fairing traders as the major form of off-shore transport.
