Smartphones are perhaps the most common mobile devices visible today in the hands of enterprise workforce and common individuals. While smartphones help us complete tasks faster & more efficiently, it is necessary to protect these devices from viruses & other malware in order to increase performance, efficiency, and user experience. Surprisingly, a study reveals that only 4 percent of the total number of smartphone users across the world use software enabling virus protection. Stealing of usernames & financial passwords, loss of contact lists, and identity theft are some of the consequences when viruses attack a smartphone. Listed below are simple tips to help you protect your smartphone from viruses:

1. Be Cautious with Attachments – Exercise caution while opening attachments in MMS messages and emails. Avoid opening attachments from unknown contacts. Also, do not open attachments from a known contact if the subject appears suspicious to you. Sometimes, the contact’s smartphone is infected by viruses & malware which spreads to other devices through emails. Also be very cautious while opening a link ...

2. No Illegitimate Downloading of Applications – Only legitimate app stores should be visited for downloading mobile applications. The rise in the manufacture of apps in the mobile market, has led to an explosion of malware & viruses. Most viruses enter a smartphone through gaming apps, social networking apps, financial tracking apps, and antivirus apps which are mostly forged. A mobile user must make sure to thoroughly read reviews before downloading and installing any app.

3. Restoring the Smartphone – Restore the factory settings of a smartphone to minimize the possibility of a virus attack. First remove the SIM card & the memory card of the device, then go to the menu and press on the restore button of the factory settings to get rid of viruses that may be present on the smartphone.

4. Bluetooth Must Be Undiscoverable – The Bluetooth of a smartphone must always be set as undiscoverable. If it remains discoverable, viruses penetrate the device through the Bluetooth connection. Most Bluetooth viruses destroy the performance of a smartphone by running down the battery. But there are few other viruses which may completely disable a smartphone by stealing its contact details & other personal information.

5. Use of Permission List is Recommended – Using the permission list every time an app is downloaded in the smartphone is a must. This keeps threats posed from viruses & all other malware to a minimum.

6. Update Software at Regular Intervals – If the software of a smartphone is not updated regularly, the security features of the device will also not be active. Only if the security settings of a smartphone are regularly upgraded, viruses & malware will be denied entry, thus preventing an attack.

7. Use a Good Antivirus Software – Most viruses infect a smartphone while the user is browsing the internet, downloading an attachment, or sending & receiving emails. This can be stopped if a high quality antivirus software program is installed in the smartphone. Good antivirus software not only protects a smartphone from potential virus attacks, it also removes the existing malware in the mobile device. Other features provided by antivirus programs are virus scans and software updates to ensure that a smartphone is working effectively to give its best performance.

Follow the simple steps mentioned above and experience a virus free performance of your smartphone.
