Famous Quotes For The Traveller
The world of travel is well-documented, from travel guides to novels and when embarking on a trip of your own it’s tempting to document the sights and sounds as it’s your own unique experience. However, of course other people have had similar experiences and some have even managed to get their work published. Very few roads are unbeaten in our world today but it doesn't make the personal experience any less rewarding. Here are five quote to inspire and perhaps influence the traveller in you:
"A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step." – Lao Tzu
Lao Tzu was a Chinese Taoist Philosopher and this quote is encouragement for the person who puts off until tomorrow. Travelling whether it be a worldwide trip, voluntary work abroad or a shorter charitable volunteer holiday is a big commitment and it takes a lot of organising. Take the first step by doing some research into where you’d like to visit and how you’d like to get there and then make it work for your budget and the time you have available.
"There are only two emotions in a plane: boredom and terror." ...
... – Orson Welles
Those who dread the thought of flying long-haul and being trapped on a plane will identify with this Orson Welles’ quote. Why not consider other means of travel - train, car or boat. Taking a working holiday on a chartered yacht or island hopping on small boats could be an alternative. Travelling through Africa by rail and road is an option once you have reached the continent.
"There are no foreign lands. It is the traveller only who is foreign." – Robert Louis Stevenson
Stevenson was a Scottish novelist and travel writer, there are so many of his quotes that are still relevant today. This is always good to keep in the back of your mind when travelling. It can get tough sometimes, through culture shock or just plain tiredness, you’re the foreigner in someone else’s land, respect that. Even if you are on short volunteer holidays or mixing luxury with budget be mindful of the land you’re in.
"A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it." – John Steinbeck
Go with it, embrace it, often, when travelling things don’t go to plan; it’s as simple as that. Sure, have an idea about your voluntary work abroad or round-the-world ticket, be safe but don’t let planning scupper the chaos of travel.
"Tourists don’t know where they’ve been, travellers don’t know where they’re going." – Paul Theroux
Novelist and travel writer Paul Theroux's quote denotes the desire to travel, once that first trip has been and gone the next will be calling. Travelling is a bug and the more you travel the more you want to see and experience.
