Internet Tracking Software: Does It Help Or Hurt?
The Internet is such a temptation. You can indulge in whatever pastime appeals to you with just a few clicks of the mouse. Maybe you like to follow sports or world events –it’s all there on the Internet. If you’re a weather watcher, the Internet provides instant information on current weather conditions around the world. Shopping has never been easier than it is now on the Internet. Or maybe you enjoy connecting with family and friends through Facebook or any of the other social media sites. Whatever distraction you’re looking for, you’ll find it there in abundance.
But that’s not all the Internet has provided for us. It has also streamlined business-related tasks. From researching information on competitors to tracking shipments through FedEx or UPS to ordering office supplies, the Internet has changed the face of business in the U.S. and around the world. In fact, most businesses need the Internet to effectively compete in today’s marketplace. This means, of course, that many employees need Internet access to do their jobs. The result is that this powerful tool, which has provided so many advantages ...
... for business, has also provided an almost irresistible temptation for employees to distract themselves during business hours –so much so, in fact, that it has proved to be a negative impact on employee productivity in the workplace.
In an effort to solve the problem, many business owners and managers have started using Internet tracking software. This type of software is especially popular in businesses where employees need access to the Internet in order to do their jobs. While there are many different versions of employee Internet monitoring software, they do all have one thing in common – they invade the privacy of your employees. Once your workers catch on to the fact that you’re “spying” on their Internet usage, their morale will suffer. And once their morale suffers, their productivity will as well.
But the real problem with Employee Internet Monitoring Software is this: you simply cannot possibly monitor your employees’ Internet use because their Internet access is not limited to workplace computers. Smart phones have become increasingly popular, and employees with smart phones have access to the Internet any time they want it. Some recent studies have shown that nearly 90 percent of young U.S. workers now carry smart phones with them each and every day.
If you can’t effectively monitor your employees’ Internet usage without destroying their morale, maybe monitoring isn’t the answer at all. Measuring the amount of time your employees are productive, rather than monitoring their usage, is a much more positive and proactive way of addressing the issue.
