Driving between Srinagar and Leh brings one to the alpine meadow town of Sonamarg. In summer,Sonamarg is a green alpine meadow that stretches against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains. It is only in summer that tourists have a small window of opportunity to visit this place. Within reach are some of the taller peaks of the Himalayas. Sonamarg is a place that was part of the old trade route that connected Leh with the outside world.
To get to Leh from Sonamarg one needs to cross the inhospitable Zoji La which is a mountain pass. The Amarnath pilgrimage starts from Baltal close to Sonamarg, while travelling between Srinagar and Leh, Sonmarg is a regular stop for tourists. Several people come exclusively to Sonamarg. It is best to avoid the Amarnath pilgrimage time as most of the accommodation will be booked. To be not disappointed, it is best to book in advance.
Perched at an altitude of 2780m above sea level, Sonamarg hugs the banks of the Sindh Nallah, a tributary of the Jhelum River. Within sight are the peaks like Sirbal Peak, Amarnath Peak, ...
... Machoi Peak and Kolhoi Peak. The mountain streams in this locality team with trout so anglers have a fruitful time here. Sonamarg has very few permanent residents in summer. It is an avalanche prone area that is covered in thick snow for many months. The largest presence in Sonamarg is of the Indian Army. Sonamarg hotels are not many but many travel companies have an exclusive Sonamarg holiday package and they establish tented accommodation for tourists here.
Thajiwas glacier is a day’s trek away. It is not a tough climb and it is possible to get ponies too. When the town opens in May, snow can be still seen as a thick blanket in Sonamarg. As in all mountainous area, Sonamarg also has very changeable weather with a warm sunny day turning dark and chill within hours.
Excursions can be arranged to Baltal, Vishansar Lake, Krishansar Lake, Gadsar Lake and Gangabal Lake. All these are glacier lakes that hold clear green water. They are filled with different varieties of trout. River rafting enthusiasts can take part in the competition that is organized here every year.
The nearest airport for Sonamarg is Srinagar airport from where Sonamarg is 87 kms away. One can make in around 3 hours. Groups of trekkers take advantage of the variety of treks available to reach the higher locations. There are many treks that will suit beginners too.
