The Ford F150 truck is well known for being the world's best-selling truck. If you're thinking of joining the masses and buying a new or used F150 of your own, you'll soon run into an alphabet soup of trim lines. In Canada, you'll encounter 12 of them for the 2013 model year alone. What's the difference? Let's take a look.

Standard Ford F150 Trim Lines
The 2013 Ford F150 is available in five standard trim levels:

XL – The Ford F150 XL comes with a 3.7 litre Ti-VCT V6 engine, electronic 6-speed transmission with tow-haul mode, 17" grey styled steel wheels, painted bumpers, power 4-wheel disc anti-lock brakes, trailer sway control, AdvanceTrac with RSC, and an AM/FM stereo

STX – The Ford F150 STX is a step up from the XL with 17" machined aluminum wheels, black bar style grille with colour-keyed surround, body contoured bumpers, customer information display, outside temperature display, MyKey, cloth split-bench seat with 4-way headrests, an AM/FM/CD with audio input jack, and SiriusXM Satellite radio with a prepaid six month subscription.

XLT – The Ford 150 XLT is the next step up ...
... with painted accents added to the aluminum wheels, chrome bumpers, chrome grille, cruise control, remote keyless entry, colour-coordinated carpets and floor mats, power windows, side mirrors, and door locks,

FX – Available in FX2 and FX4 models, the FX trimline features a larger 5.0 litre TI-VCT V8 FFV engine, six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission, 18" machined aluminum wheels, power driver seat, front bucket seats (cloth), message centre with a trip computer and 4.2" LCD
productivity screen, body-coloured bumpers, 6" angular cab steps, MyFord, and fog lamps. The FX4 also has a electronic-locking rear differential.

Lariat – The Ford F150 Lariat builds on the FX, adding 18" 7-spoke bright aluminum wheels, chrome surround grille, 110 volt power outlet, Ford Sync, MyFord Touch, leather power seats (heated and cooled), power rear slider, remote sensing system, remote start, dual-zone temperature control, memory driver's seat, memory power adjustable pedals, reverse sensing system,

The basic Ford F150 trim lines can be enhanced with optional packages as well. For example, if the base Ford F150 XL is fine for most of your needs but you'd prefer the 5.0 V8 engine, you can upgrade the powertrain package to the larger engine. Want to add skid plates, a tow package, or a trailer brake controller? Additional packages are available for each trim line.

Premium Ford F150 Trim Lines
In addition to the basic trim lines, the 2013 F150 can be ordered with "premium" trim lines which are: XTR, FX Appearance, FX Luxury Package, Lariat Chrome, King Ranch, Platinum, and Harley-Davidson. Each of these adds additional features to the truck such as heads up displays, navigation systems, moonroofs, tailgate steps, and more.

Whether you're buying a new or used Ford F150, the choices you make can make a significant difference on the truck's total price. For example, you may find that an upgraded trim line is a better value than going with a base trim and upgrading it to suit your needs.
