How The World Uses Luminaries
Candle luminaries are used for a lot of different events and are especially popular as fundraiser items. Their low sale price makes them move fast. People involved in the fundraiser normally buy their stock of these items from dealers, but it’s not hard to make them yourself with a kit.
Paper luminaries are candles or battery powered lights that are ensconced by paper, often a paper bag. You’ve probably seen them lining homes’ walkways on special occasions or holidays. Some versions have interesting shapes cut out of the bag out of which the light inside can glow. Typically people put about an inch of sand into the bottom of the bag and stick a candle or other light source into it.
Halloween is a very popular time for these items. They make any party or gathering more exciting. Around this time of year, most dealers are rolling out a wide range of styles. Some are geared to kids and are creepy and spooky, with themes like witches, spiders, Jack-O-Lanterns and ghosts. Others are designed to simply emit a noticeable orange glow when placed throughout yards to light up the Halloween night.
Christmas ...
... luminaries are probably seen more than any others. In some neighborhoods, you’ll see sidewalks decorated festively with them. At night, they truly bring about a sense of “silent night” as they sit there and emit lovely glows of red, green, gold and whatever other colors people enjoy.
These special Christmas lights are perfect compliments to other holiday decorations, and they’re eye-catching accents to parties and get-togethers. Many people see these festive lights at Christmas and call to mind the bible story of the three wise men following a star to baby Jesus’ manger to bring him gifts. Churches, of course, love to use them to light paths during night time services and bring a more colorful mood to services.
Finally, aside from Christmas, churches and their parishioners use luminaries for a number of religious ceremonies including memorials, weddings, Easter celebrations, confirmations, first communions and many others.
In summary, people the world over use luminaries for a wide range of celebrations, special occasions, memorials and other types of events. They’re available with both candles and battery-powered lights, the latter of which is usually used indoors for safety.
